i read king lear all the way through at one sitting today,and got so involved i felt upset at the end.
i think it was the bit where lear holds his dead daughter cordelia in his arms that got to me.
none of the sources shakespeare used for the play killed cordelia, so why did he feel the need to? i'd love to be able to ask him that question!
what a FANTASTIC play it is!
tomorrow i will be watching a film version of it, directed by Kosintzev (i think that's how you spell it).

There is plenty 'internal hints' as to why the Bard might have felt that way inclined...I've always felt that a 'telling' hint lies in...'How sharper than a serpent's tooth it is to have a thankless child....'

Also, I don't suppose Shakespeare could have had Cordelia ascending the British throne when she was married to France ...

Pro it was certainly that, though her survival was a good enough outcome for the other versions of the story.
but you're right about the monarchy bit - i doubt james I would have liked that!

Pro We are just introducing the blonde to Shakespeare and she gets really caught up in it. Bet the film is not near as good as the play!
